Zakynthos
The people
that live of the ilsand call their place still the
“Flower of the East”,
in other
words: "Fiore de Levante"
The name
of the island, Zakynthos, originates probably from the
son of the king Dardanos who was called Zakynthos.
In the
years 1484 until 1797 the Venetians occupied the Island.
The
influence of the occupations can still be felt on the
island.
Especially
the old Zakythos' songs you hear in the Tarverns:
The
“Cantades” is a clear example of this.
It's a
shame that the capital, called Zakynthos-city, was
destructed by an earth-quake in 1953. But most parts
have been reconstructed according to the old building
plans.
The
inhabitans of Zakynthos life mainly from the agriculture
and tourism. They grow melons, citrus-fruits, olives and
whine. But also many vegatables. A speciality on the
island is "mandolato" ,
A soft
noga from egg-white, honey and amandelen.
You can
make excursions from Zakynthos to Kefalinia, Olympia,
Pelopponnesos and Athene.
But the
island itself is also very beautifull.
The
shipwreck,
Blue
Caves;
Alll very
beautifull places.
The beach
at Aghios Sostis is very child-safe and has a slow slope
into the sea.
But also
in the north the beaches are very clean and child-safe.
In Laganas
you find many souvenir shops and places to eat.
They
mainly focus on the English audience.
Very
beatifull other little places are:
in
Limnionas,
Exohora

A trip
through the south-west side is terrific because of the
many olive trees.
You will
find an hagedis at many places and will be suprised by
the smells of thyme and Oregano.
In other
words: a superb Greek destination,
where you
can enjou sun, see and nature!
